November 6, 2009 – The Voice of the People

Have you noticed that the voice of the people does not seem to matter much anymore? President Abraham Lincoln concluded his Gettysburg Address, reminding that ours is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

In last Tuesday’s election, the voters of the State of Maine repealed a law enacted by its legislators. That law had legalized same-sex marriages. Obviously, the people’s representatives had not represented the people when they passed that law. The people have spoken, as they will in any state, given the chance. There still is basic logic in the soul of the nation. Marriage is what marriage is.

However, the minority cries fowl. The gay rights leaders blamed President Obama for not getting involved. The President should have told the people how to vote? As for rights, these cannot be manufactured. I do not have the “right” to do a lot of things that I might like to do.

Despite the worrisome going-ons in our federal and state governments, I still have faith in the voice of the people. That has been and will continue to be what preserves our great nation. It comes from the soul that the Creator has instilled into his creatures.
