More than 30,000 children gathered to celebrate their missionary spirit - and their role as missionaries- on a sunny day in Nairobi. The annual Mass with the their local bishop, Cardinal John Njue, is part of the activities of the Pontifical Missionary Childhood in Kenya. During the Offertory Procession, children brought gifts for children in need in their archdiocese - sugar, bananas, salt, chalk, and slates. They also offered what financial help they could.

World Mission Sunday - mission awareness for all the missions of the world!
World Mission Sunday is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. Annually, World Mission Sunday is celebrated on the next-to-last Sunday in October. Offerings from Catholics in the United States, on World Mission Sunday and throughout the year, are combined with offerings from Catholics around the globe and distributed to mission dioceses - about 1,100 at this time.
On World Mission Sunday, celebrated the next to last Sunday of October every year, the Catholics of the world united at Mass to recommit ourselves to this Baptismal vocation to be missionaries. As we pray and respond here in the United States, we are replicating what also took place in every parish and chapel in every corner of the globe. Your generosity through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith is reaching those who await the “Good News” of Jesus, who long to experience His hope and love.
More than 1,150 young churches in the Developing World count on your generous response this World Mission Sunday. Please also continue to pray that all of us in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown are eager and effective witnesses of Jesus, as He asked us to be.
Even as we may struggle with challenges here at home, on World Mission Sunday, we were called to remember in a special way the great needs of the Church, and her life-giving service, in the Developing World. We should encourage prayer, personal sacrifice and generous financial support for more than 1,150 dioceses throughout Asia, Africa, the PacificIslands, and remote regions of Latin America.
In times of tragedy – natural disaster, war, and persecution – our mission family looks to the Church for help and hope. World MissionSunday celebrates our unity as a human family and provides an opportunity to support the life-giving presence of local priests, Religious and lay catechists among the suffering and the poor of the Missions.
Thank you for personally investing yourself in the Church’s mission to bring the “Good News” of Jesus Christ to the very ends of the earth. Please live your Baptismal call to be missionaries by supporting the Church’s worldwide missionary outreach in prayer and sacrifice.
